MD from University of Oslo, Medical School, 1983 and specialist in internal medicine. PhD 1994. Training in anesthesiology, ass. professor of Internal Medicine 1991-92, University of Oslo and senior research fellow at Ullevål University Hospital. Senior consultant, Intensive Care Unit, Department of Acute Medicine since 1996. National coordinator of VALUE study. Founding president of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) Norway, International President of MSF 2000-2004. Founding board member of Drugs for neglected disease initiative (DNDi), Geneva, Switzerland. Numerous field missions for MSF in Africa and Asia. Consultant for DNDi.

- Autonomic nervous system in cardiovascular disease
- Sympathetic activity during hypobaric hypoxia
- Sympathetic activity during surgical and anaesthesiological procedures
- The effects of antocyanes/antioxydants on cardiovascular and sympathetic function
